Meet Marisol Arboleda-Diaz of Gables Construction Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol Arboleda-Diaz.

Hi Marisol, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Prior to joining Gables Construction Group (CGC), I was in charge of directing the successful mass manufacturing of very large home developments with numerous unique factors.

During my career, I was the first woman ever to earn the distinction of receiving the Director of the Year Award from the Latin Builders Association (LBA), where I served as a member of its Board of Directors for many years. While on the LBA’s executive board, I was vice president for seven years and also served as chairperson of the committees in charge of events, membership, and education.

I truly enjoy serving and contributing to the community. I served on the Miami-Dade County Development Process Advisory Committee (DPAC) from 2006 to 2007, where I advised the Mayor and Miami-Dade County Commissioners on matters impacting the building industry while reporting to the County Manager’s office. In 2008, I sat on the County Board for Commission for Women and in 2007 I was a nominee to serve on the Public Health Trust for Miami but I did not accept the seat.

I also had an opportunity to serve as director and board member at the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club and the Coral Gables Crime Watch Committee. More recently, I am on the Executive Board of Directors for the Builders Association of South Florida, a member of the National Home Builders Association (NHBA), the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) and a state-certified roofing contractor.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With any successes, there are struggles and challenges along the way. There are “growing pains” as a company expands their footprint and team. Over the years, we have developed the perfect team to reflect our high standards. Our recent challenges have been similar to those of many other companies with supply chain issues.

We’ve been impressed with Gables Construction Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
First and foremost is my faith in God. Second are my husband and children. I’m fortunate to have an adopted father who served as my high school guidance counselor. He was an angel from above. I learned his “10 steps to success” and have trained my mind to face each day cheerfully never forgetting to smile by following these guidelines for success and the combined love of my family.

About Gables Construction Group (GCG)

With a focus on luxury commercial and residential development in South Florida, Gables Construction Group is a full-service construction firm. In Her Own Words: Marisol Arboleda-Diaz literally builds a family business

As the pandemic wanes, many women find themselves returning to work, but Marisol Arboleda-Diaz, who started a construction firm with her husband, has been on the job the entire time.

“A significant influence on our way of life and work has been caused by the pandemic. CEOs from a wide range of industries have been forced to take a step back, pivot, and, in some cases, completely rethink their company plans as a result. Introspection and advancement on both a personal and professional level were made possible.

I consider myself lucky to be able to work closely with my husband in the running of our commercial and residential construction company, Gables Construction Group, which we started together. When we got married, I said “I do” to everything, and we became one as a result. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that our church is home, and our workplace is state. We don’t combine the two…and thus far, it’s been successful for us. Working with my husband is enjoyable. It has always been a source of comfort, but it has become even more so during the pandemic.

Covid claimed the lives of two members of my family, my uncle and first cousin with whom I grew up. While I was dealing with my loss and caring for my family, the construction business experienced a major shift. When construction shortages occurred, we had to assist our staff (as well as ourselves) in adjusting to the new situation. In order to keep up with demand, we must now plan our orders months in advance and hope that the materials arrive on time. We have to manage the expectations of our clients. Moreover, we must have faith that there are no additional shortages in our firm that have not yet been identified.

With 26 years of construction experience under my belt, I’ve earned the respect of my colleagues and leaders in the business. Despite the fact that men dominate the construction industry, there are several opportunities for women in the industry, both in the office and on the job site. However, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors, the construction industry would require 650,000 workers by 2022, notwithstanding the pandemic, and women already account for only 10 percent of the workforce. Many organizations, including the National Association of Women in Construction, have stated that the gender pay gap in the construction industry is small, with women earning 99.1 percent of what men receive.

In the construction business, women’s job opportunities include, but are not limited to, hammering, crane operating, and concrete pouring. Administration, planning, design, client service, and project management are some of the other essential responsibilities of a project manager. As a result of the pandemic, new positions have been created to assist in the management of new protocols, regulatory compliance, and supply chain difficulties that have arisen.

Despite the obstacles created by the epidemic, I am comforted by the fact that our company is still thriving as we look to the future. Our leadership, the foundation my husband and I have built, and a fantastic team of professionals who have become like family to us are all factors in our success, which I credit to our team.”

This is a time for virtual community and sharing. If you would like to contribute to this ongoing narrative on the impact of the pandemic, please send an e-mail to esherberg@bizjournals.com.

A Couple That Builds Together….

Family-run businesses comprise 64% of the U.S. gross domestic product, and husband and wife teams run 1.4 million businesses nationwide. Running a business with your partner has both benefits and risks.  The real-life experiences of co-founding couple Alberto Diaz and Marisol Arboleda-Diaz can assist you in navigating your journey as a couple that builds together.

Located in the heart of Coral Gables, the Gables Construction Group is a family-owned and operated business with a long history rooted in tradition, family, and trust. After meeting at a networking event in the Bahamas several years ago, Alberto and Marisol had no idea that their casual encounter would lead to a successful construction company years later.

Personal and professional success are built on the same foundations. To be successful in both your marriage and your business, you’ll need a set of rules to follow. The ups and downs of running a business with your spouse are inevitable when doing business together. In and out of the workplace and total dedication to your collaboration leads to long-term success. In order to manage a successful business together, Alberto and Marisol knew from the start that they needed to lay down some rules.

  1. Boundaries Are Essential: Decide who is in charge of what and why. At work and at home, it’s feasible to be in charge of both. It’s important to remember that your partner doesn’t want to be micromanaged. Keep your mind open to your partner’s ideas. A person has the ultimate say when it comes to matters that fall within their purview…and so do those who are responsible for other areas.
  2. Commit Don’t Quit: Check in with your partner on a regular basis. Are you really dedicated to working with your spouse to run a company? What’s it like working with each other now that you’re both older? Resentment grows when we do things because we feel obligated or anticipate anything in return. Avoid this by making sure you and your partner are completely dedicated to each other.
  3. Who’s The Boss OR Not: Focus on each other’s strengths as you establish your responsibilities. By focusing on the abilities you provide to the company, you are able to work autonomously thanks to your common vision. Even if there is some overlap, try your utmost to keep boundaries clearly defined.
  4. R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Setting boundaries helps you avoid conflict because you will not always agree with each other. Take heed of the percentage who fail because they lack trust and communication. Make sure that the trust and respect that you build in your personal connection spills over into your professional one.
  5. Meetings Matter:  Even if it’s just you and your significant other, hold regular business meetings with agendas. Make a list of what you’ve covered and write it down. Maintain focus on the goal. It’s a good idea to have a few scheduled meetings at the beginning of the week.
  6. Keep Fun On The Agenda: Maintain your relationship as a married couple. You both deserve some quality time together. It’s easy for couples who work together to neglect to make time for enjoyable activities that have nothing to do with their work. Spend time together, whether it’s for dinner, an event, or a walk.
  7. Communication Is Key: Take a break from work to have a conversation with your partner. Listening is just as important as talking, if not more so. The desire to be heard is a basic human need.
  8. Break It Up: For some couples, it’s necessary to take a break from each other. Couples that spend a lot of time together may benefit from some time apart. Do what you enjoy. Also, urge your partner to take a break and have some fun with you.

There are a number of obstacles that come with building a business as a couple, some of which are expected and others that are not. With the right amount of focus, boundaries, and attention, you, your spouse, and your business will flourish. When you run a business with your spouse, you have to cope with the highs and lows that come with that. In order to build your company and keep your enthusiasm alive, follow these guidelines.

Communication, Constraints, and Confidence In Construction

Women confront particular difficulties when it comes to asserting themselves in the workplace. Success in management and leadership depends on the ability to assert one’s authority. Female leaders are more prone to apologize, add disclaimers, or be unduly careful when speaking. Some go beyond with the explanations and apologies, even when they aren’t necessary.

After working in a male-dominated industry for more than two decades, I’ve come across many instances earlier in my career where I’ve felt like my input didn’t matter, that my opinions weren’t taken seriously and that I was reluctant to speak up about issues about which I was well-versed.  I attribute my change to the three C’s: Communication, Constraints, and Confidence.

Communication: Effective communication to share your position or point of view is not a sign of insecurity. When you communicate clearly, you will quickly notice that you command more attention and respect, and you will receive more satisfactory responses. Avoid statements about “you” and instead focus on your team and how they will benefit from the conversation.

Constraints: There will always be constraints in any industry, but managing these constraints in the construction industry is highly likely in your day-to-day operations. Don’t wait for the “ideal time” to address these constraints with employees and clients. Getting ahead of issues will make your staff and clients feel more at ease with the overall process and/or project. Remove the fear of being disliked or labeled; your job is to identify constraints and develop positive solutions to help move everyone forward.

Confidence: It may not come easily, but you have to dig deep and find it. Anticipate challenges and prepare effective responses so that you know exactly what you’re talking about. You want to demonstrate to your team and clients that they can rely on you and your decision-making processes. Be well-versed in your idea so that you can defend it with confidence and facts. Know and believe in your unique abilities.

Speak clearly and don’t be afraid to express yourself. Seek mentorship, and professional assistance, and continue to educate yourself to help cement your leadership growth in the workplace.

WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN BUILDING CAREERS IN A BOOMING INDUSTRY

March is Women’s History Month, which honors women’s contributions to American history. It’s no coincidence that Women in Construction (WIC) Week falls on the first full week of March every year.

The goal of WIC Week is to not only recognize and honor women in construction but also to inspire more women to pursue careers in the sector. It’s one of the fastest-growing industries in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with a forecasted growth rate of 10%. Between 2020 and 2030, it is estimated that 400,000 additional jobs will be added.

With over 80% of construction companies struggling to find workers and a workforce of just 10% women, there has never been a more essential or appropriate time to encourage women to enter the field and to work to establish a diverse and inclusive workforce.

An excellent example of someone who is leading the way in this arena is Marisol Arboleda-Diaz, vice president at Gables Construction Group (GCG).  Marisol is a well-known and respected figure in the South Florida construction center, thanks to her service to the community, her significant professional experience, and her commitment to growing GCG, where she has held senior management positions since 2013.

Prior to joining CGC, Marisol was in charge of directing the successful mass manufacturing of very large home developments with numerous unique factors.

Among other accomplishments throughout her career, Marisol was the first woman ever to earn the distinction of receiving the Director of the Year Award from the Latin Builders Association (LBA), where she served as a member of its Board of Directors for many years. While on the LBA’s executive board, she was vice president for seven years and also served as chairperson of the committees in charge of events, membership, and education.

Marisol’s numerous contributions to the community also include serving on the Miami-Dade County Development Process Advisory Committee (DPAC) from 2006 to 2007, where she advised the Mayor and Miami-Dade County Commissioners on matters impacting the building industry while reporting to the County Manager’s office.

Over the course of her career, Marisol has also served as director and board member at the Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club and the Coral Gables Crime Watch Committee. She is also on the Executive Board of Directors for the Builders Association of South Florida, a member of the National Home Builders Association (NHBA) and FHBA Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA), and a state-certified roofing contractor.

“I have experienced some wonderful moments of growth and opportunity in the two decades I have worked in construction.  I truly enjoy introducing and sharing my journey with young women when given the chance,” said Arboleda-Diaz. “There’s more than just building in the construction industry.  The career paths are endless. From estimating to visual design, architecture, or leadership…the skies are the limit for women in construction.”

Women in Construction Week strives to highlight the expanding importance of women in the sector while also raising awareness of the absence of women in the area. It’s time for women to see the construction industry as a viable career path in a field in which they can succeed. For more information, please visit http://www.gablesconstructiongroup.com

SIX QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN LOOKING TO BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME

You’ve decided to build your dream home.  You think you’ve found the perfect neighborhood, lot and builder.  While it is an exciting milestone, it can be overwhelming.  There are many questions you should ask your builder and consider before starting the process to avoid miscommunication and frustration. Here are six of the most important ones:

What’s your builder’s experience and background?

You want to be sure your builder has a solid track record and experience.  How many years have they been in business?  How many homes have they built?  Are they licensed and insured?  Do they have references from previous buyers?

How much is the estimated cost and what exactly is included?

Touring model homes is fun and thrilling and it’s easy to picture yourself and your family living in this perfect space.  Yet model homes are designed to get buyers hooked with all the upgrades, bells and whistles, and not all of those features may be included in every home. How much are upgrades?  Decide which upgrades are most important to you and make sure those costs are in your budget.  You’ll need to get clarification on what exactly is included in the cost, as well as a payment schedule on amounts due at various phases of the process and a timeline for the build. Is it just the house or is the lot included?  Some builders provide a base cost for the construction of a bare-boned home, without accounting for the price of the lot it sits on – another key factor in overall price that you’ll want to know.

Can I select design choices?

Most builders allow buyers to select the type of kitchen cabinets, backsplash and flooring they desire, however, some do not.  Some new builds come with “standard only” packages with minimal or no personalization. Make sure you know your options before committing.

What type of lot should I select?

Several personal factors will affect what type of lot you should select for your new home.  If privacy is of the utmost importance to you, you will not want to opt for a “zero lot line” home.  Families with young children may opt for a home on a cul-de-sac or a dead end street for outdoor safety.  If you are a morning person, you may want to have your bedroom window facing the sunrise.  And if sunsets are your thing, you may want rear living windows facing the sundown sky.

You will undoubtedly have many more questions for your builder before you sign the contract and even throughout the homebuilding process.  Don’t be shy when it comes to asking your builder questions.  They share the same goal in creating the home of your dreams!
